Venice is Venice. That is the best way to describe the city. Venice was the starting point of the Mediterranean trip. The city itself is like nothing I have seen before mainly because there are no roads. Other then St. Mark’s square just walking around the city seeing shops and canals was the best part. The canals sometimes had a not so pleasant odor but for the most part it did not smell. They had a bus and taxi service but they were boats. I think the best views of Venice some from the bell tower on San Giorgio island. It was easy to get around and communicate. Most people spoke English or at least enough to get by.
St. Mark’s basilica is the main attraction in the city. Above the entrance are replica of the four horses that were stolen in the 4th crusade by the Venetians in 1204. The real ones are inside the basilica. I thought it was very poor of the modern church to lie about where they came from. The information inside the basilica says they were allegedly displayed on the hippodrome in Constantinople and they were transported to their current location in the 4th crusade. They were not allegedly on the hippodrome and they were not transported. They were there and were stolen by force.
