Olympia, Greece

To get to Olympia the boat docked in the small town of Katakolon. From there you have to take a 45 min train ride or 30 minute taxi ride. The small fishing village of Katakolon had lots of tourist shops and restaurants. This was the first real archeological site I visited on this trip. We got to Olympia first thing in the morning before nearly everyone else. By the time we left it was very crowded.

The ruins are impressive. Olympia was the site of the Olympian temple of Zeus, one of the seven ancient wonders. The columns on this temple were massive. The original Olympic stadium and tunnel are also here. The original marble starting and finishing line are here and tons of people wanted to get their photo of them on the starting line. Right next to the site is a very good museum that houses various states and artifacts that were found at Olympia. The next stop after Olympia was Athens
