From what I have heard Athens is a dirty city, it was. When we first got off the boat to walk to the metro (to take it to the Acropolis) a stray dog started following us. There were a good amount of dogs just walking around the city. Another thing that I noticed about Athens was the significant amount of graffiti on the sides of buildings.
The Acropolis is the centerpiece of the city. Perched up on the hill it is separated from the grim of Athens. It is a very impressive structure to say the least. From there you can get views of the city and sea.
Near the base of the Acropolis are some other sites including the temple of Zeus. What is left of this temple is just a few columns and the foundation. Fully erected this temple would have been colossal. These are the largest columns I have ever seen.
The National Archeological Museum of Athens has an amazing collection of Greek antiquities. My favorite piece in the museum was a bronze statue of Poseidon. There is not much else that interested me in Athens and one day there was just fine with me. After Athens the next port of call was Myconos, Greece.
