Death Valley April 2007
My friend and I went to Death Valley in the intent to climb Telescope Peak, the tallest mountain in the park. We left Los Angeles early on a Saturday morning and drove to Death Valley. We drove in the south east entrance then up the valley to badwater. Badwater is the lowest point in North America at an elevation of -282 ft. It was windy and about 90-95 degrees in the valley. We camped the night at a campground not too far from the trailhead for Telescope peak with the plan to hike the peak early in the morning. The next morning it was not too windy but about 35F at the trailhead. The higher we got the colder and windier it became. At about 9500 ft we were hiking in the clouds. It was too cold and windy for us so instead of Telescope peak we made it to Bennett Peak. It was about 19F and 20-30 mph gusts on the summit, needless to say we didnt stick around too long.
